ALFONSO PORTILLO (in 2000) President of the Republic & Commander of the Armed Forces
Alfonso Portillo was elected President of the Republic of Guatemala in December 1999, and took office on Jan 14, 2000. He also served as the General Commander of the Armed Forces of Guatemala.
President Portillo graduated as a lawyer and political science expert from "Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico", where he received a PH. D in economy. He has lectured in several Universities in Latin America, and has been a popular columnist in different national newspapers.
He was a member of Congress from 1994 to 1996, and Chief of Staff of the Guatemala Democratic Party in congress on 1994. He was appointed representative of Congress to the Monetary Board from 1991 to 1995, Chairman of the Municipal Issues of Congress in 1994, and Chairman of the Economic, Foreign Trade and Regional Integration Commission in 1995.
President Portillo was an active member of the Democratic Party in Guatemala, and was elected Deputy Secretary General from 1992 to 1994. He run as the Presidential candidate for the party "Frente Republicano Guatemalteco" in 1995, and in 199, which led him to take office in January 14th, 2000
